Summary
Limited direct shipment. Effective July 13, 2001, Rhode Island changed from a state requiring consumer permits for direct shipment to a limited shipping state whereby Rhode Island residents must participate in an on-site sale in order for wine to be directly shipped to them. IMPORTANT NOTE: Your common carrier may not ship to Rhode Island. S752 / H5295 states that "it shall be unlawful for any person in the business of selling intoxicating beverages in another state or country to ship or cause to be shipped any intoxicating beverage directly to any Rhode Island resident who does not hold a valid wholesaler license issued by the state of Rhode Island." The law permits, however, out-of-state wineries to ship wine orders that are “personally placed by the purchaser at the manufacturer’s premises, for shipment to an address in Rhode Island, for non-business purposes.” All shipment packages must include the following: “Contains Alcohol, Adult Signature (over 21) Required for Delivery."
