State Shipping Laws: Michigan

Summary

December 15, 2005 Michigan Governor Granholm signed into law the new direct-to-consumer wine shipping law. The new statute, which takes effect immediately, allows for a winery anywhere in the US that obtains a direct shippers permit from the State of Michigan to ship up to 1,500 cases of wine annually to MI consumers. The winery must have an approved direct shipper's permit, register with the Michigan Department of Treasury and pay sales and excise taxes. Direct Shipper's are required to use an approved online verification service or obtain a true copy of the consumer's driver's license.

Aggregate Volume Limit

This is a limit on volume of total shipments from a winery to all consumers in the region over a specified period of time.

  • The total of shipments to all consumers in this region have an aggregate volume limit of 1500 cases per year for combined onsite and offsite sales.
